Jack and Mary raised fruits and vegtables on their farm, kept chickens and cows and sold the products to the nearby markets. Jack , being an expert carpenter, worked at the trade on the farm and in Salem after moving there. He also built boats with engine power which brought good income when used to assemble and tow logs on the Willamette River.
