William Getty was the son of Dr John Getty who was a surgeon and apothecary of Dundalk, County Louth in Ireland. In November 1826, William was apprenticed to his father for 7 years.
Dr William Getty became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, London in 1834.
In 1852, at the age of 40, he married Selina Burge, a farmer's daughter, of Sherborne, Dorset, England who was 19 years of age.
In 1852 they sailed on the "Formosa" for Australia. They left Southampton on 7th August, 1852 and arrived in Port Jackson, via Melbourne, on 22nd October, 1852. Their first child was born at sea, en route to Australia. Two of their children are buried at Morpeth, NSW.
In the shipping register, William and Selina Getty are listed as passengers. One would have thought that he would have been employed as the ship's surgeon.
