Farrington Barricklow was born near Rising Sun, Indiana, Dec. 4, 1823 and died at his home three miles northwest of Fillmore, Saturday morning, Oct. 25, 1902 aged 78 years, 10 months 21 days.
His boyhood and early manhood days were spent in Indiana. One July 24, 1845 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Hizer, and shortly afterward moved to Illinois.
To this union seven children were born, one of which died in infancy and Annie, (Mrs. William Denham) passed away six years before her father.
The surviving children are: William H. and Charles F. Barricklow and Mrs. Jennie Digman of Fillmore, Ill., and Mrs. Meda Lang and Mrs. Sarah Clotfelter of Hillsboro, Ill.
His aged wife whose life has so closely blended with his for fifty-seven years, is also left to mourn his loss.
Mr. Barricklow had been failing for some but was apparently strong for one of his years. He was complaining some on Friday and the doctor prescribed medicine for weakness of the heart. Saturday morning he arose at his usual hour and after breakfast went out to look at his stock. After an absence of about two hours his wife became alarmed and sent a grandson to look for him. Only about a quarter of a mile from his home, he was found just after he breathed his last. He was taken to the house but it was too late. His days had been numbered; the last one had come, and death had overtaken him at his duties.
While talking with his wife a few days before about their old age and probability of death at any time he said "I am ready."
He was a man who always advocated uprightness, honesty, and loyalty. And when the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in Co. D, 126th Ill. Vol. and gave three years of his life to his country's service.
He possessed the characteristic of always looking on the "bright side" of obstacles and always thought he was too young to rest from life's duties.
We may all learn a lesson of cheerfulness from such a life, also that God will send Death to pluck us from earth when He wishes our labors cease.
The funeral services were held Monday morning at the family residence, and he was laid to rest in the cemetery at Fillmore.
