The first record to be found of the Van Barkelo family in America was at New Amsterdam, New York, where William Janse and Herman Janse Van Barkelo took grants of land in 1651.
Harmon Van Barkelo returned to his home in Borkelo, Zutphen Province of Guilderlandt, Holland, but his brother William remained in New Amsterdam where he worked at the trade of butcher. He was married in 1666 to his second wife, Leybeset(Elizabeth) Jane Claessen. In 1668 William Janse Van Barkelo returned to his home in HOlland where he remained until 1671, when he returned to America accompanied by his brother Harmon Janse and his two children Harmon Harmanse and Janetje Harmanse. Harmon Janse settled with his children at Garesand, Long Island where he died in 1673.
William Janse Van Barkelo settled at Flatbush, Long Island where he reared his family and died in 1683. Coenraed(Conradt) and Dirk, youngest children of William Janse and Leysabet (Elizabeth) Van Barkelo left Flatbush, Long Island and settled in New Jersey. Conradt married Margaret, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Laen of Monmouth Co. N. J. and went to live at Six Mile Run on the Raritan N. J. He was baptized "Coenraed" in Amersfort, Long Island Dec. 5, 1680. On page 36, Vol. 77 Jan. 1946. Sponsors: Jan Barents Van Driest N.Y.B & G Magazine, only Jantje William Van Barkelo is mentioned. He died in 1754. Had four children: 1-Mary, b- 1711 bapt. Dutch Raritan Church N.J. 2- Sarah, b- 1713 same church. 3- Conrad, (He went to Bucks Co. Penn about the year 1734 and began spelling his name Barriclow); 4- Daniel. He spelled the name Barkelow and later used Barricklow. He lived in Middlesex Co. N.J.. He was married twice; first to Altje Van Liew, daughter of Hendrick Van Liew and second to Ann or Mary Miller, oldest child of Paul Miller. He (Daniel) had fourteen children.
Coenread Van Barkelo left a will, but it was lost or stolen- here is the story: "Margaret Barkelow his widow and Daniel Barkelow his son, were cited by court as surviving executors to prove his will. A few weeks later, Daniel wrote from New Brunswick pleading his Mother's illness for not appearing in response to the Citation. After two weeks he again wrote Ten Mile Run, N.J. and said his father's house had been broken into and that his father's will with other papers had been stolen". But his son Daniel Barkelow, left a will, County of Middlesex N.J. Superior Court of New Jersey, Trenton l, N.J.
Conrad Barkelow was the oldest son of Daniel and Altje Van Liew Barkelow. He married Sarah Miller who was the youngest daughter of Paul Miller's family and a sister of Ann and Mary Miller, second wife of his father Daniel Barkelow. He was born July 10, 1742 Middlesex N.J. and died April 10, 1802 in Fayette Co. Penn. He fought in the Revolutionary War. Was a private in the 2nd Battalion of Middlesex Militia, Middlesex, N.J. in Captain Wm. Williamson's Company Mar. 1, 1777. He left a will. Register of Wills & Clerk of Fayette Co. Uniontown, Pa. They had emigrated from N.J. to York Co. Penn in the year 1787 remained there two years and in 1790 settled in Fayette County Penn. where he died in 1802. He left a will. In this will after willing the estate to his wife and children, he mentions the fact that that caused the finding of his father's will, as we had been unable to find same. This is the substance of the quotation:--"Expecting a legacy from his Father's estate, lately deceased in N. J., and wills same, share and share alike to his children." This will can be obtained from Superior Court of N.J. Trenton, N.J. This quotation from Henry Barricklow's history is also enlightening. He quotes they "owned large tracts of land in N.J. and were slave holders in the time of the Revolutionary War and lost largely during the war, not only by the ravages of the British soldiers, who were certainly plundering the country, but they also lost a large amount of clothing for the army, Continental money which proved worthless, as I have seen bundles of it that belonged to my Grand Father and I have saved a few specimens of it to this day."
Altho the name was Van Barkelo originally, then spelled Barkelo on the baptism records, the name was finally changed to Barricklow. Daniel Barricklow, son of Conrad Barkelow(Barricklow) married Mrs. Judith Ogleree - Oldham in Penn. Daniel was born Nov. 11, 1770 at Middlesex, N.J. He died Mar. 14, 1827 in Ohio County, Ind. They had eight children. Daniel and family came to Ohio Co. Ind. about 1815. He fought six months in the was of 1812. Served from Oct. 2, 1812 until April 1813. Discharged Dec. 19, Served in the 2nd Reg. 2nd Brigade Penn. Militia commanded by Gen Richard Crooks - Penn. Archives, 6th Ser. V8, P 230.
Sarah Barricklow, daughter of Daniel Barricklow, born 1803 in Fayette Co. Penn, was married twice; first to Henry Van Dyke Johnson and second to Samuel Buchanan. She had four children by Her 1st marriage and seven by her second marriage. All children were born near Rising Sun, Ind. Her first husband Henry Van Dyke Johnson was buried in the old Barricklow cemetary near Rising Sun, Ind. Sarah and family followed her two brothers, Henry and Farrington Barricklow to Kansas some time after 1856. They lived near Rantour, Ks. twenty miles east of Ottawa, Ks. In 1877 or 1878 Mrs. Myra Barricklow Spitzli and her father S. Cass Barricklow visited the family. Here are her remarks: "She must have been a widow at the time, I can't remember any man. We went on a Sat. or Sun., the children came home. I remember I had never seen such a large family. Aunt Sally Buchanan was a very sweet Old Lady as I remember her. She made quite a fuss over me, I think Daddy was a favorite of hers. I remember him telling about going down there quite often before he married in 1872." She also said "Aunt Sally Buchanan had been married before she married Buchanan."
Daniel Johnson, son of Sarah Barricklow and Henry Van Dyke Johnson, was also one of the founders of Baker University at Baldwin, Ks as was his Uncle, Henry Barricklow. He was a lay minister, a farmer, blacksmith and wagon maker. He lived three miles east of ElDorado, Kansas on the Eureka Road, now Hiway 54. It was the main line overland from Missouri to Dodge City, Ks.
