..."but Daniel left a will. In his will after willing the estate to his wife and children he mentions a fact that caused the finding of his father's will."

...The following quote about Daniel, born 1720-21, son of Conrad and Margaret, came from the Somerset County New Jersey Historical Quarterly Vol.6 p.27
"Daniel, the son of Conrad succeeded his father on the homestead in Franklin Township, Somerset County New Jersey. Daniel raised a large family, a thing quite common in those times. The family were models of sobriety, industry, economy and perseverance. Their family regulations were of the most approved pattern. They days work was done in the daytime. They rarely lighted a candle or lamp in summer, always going to bed at dusk, rising at daybreak and having milking done before sunrise by the female portion of the family. Daniel was a man of giant frame and possessed great muscular powers. He was heard to sing some of his choice spiritual songs of a Sabbath afternoon for more than a mile distance from his home.
From "Excerpts From Franklin Township Historical Notes" by Judge Ralph Voorhees...continuing the story about Daniel, son of Coenraed....obtained from Patsy Roller, 601 SW 2nd, Lindsay, Okla. 73052
"We give an incident that occured at a certain time in his meadow. He had a colored man mowing with him. The two became very thirsty and sent a couple of colored boys for water. The boys stayed a long time, so that his patience became exhausted and his temper betrayed him. He called to them, and seeing them loitering at a distance, he called to them again, and at this time accompanied the call with pretty strong language. Some of his neighbors working near heard him. Said one of the boys, "There, did you hear the minister swear!" (He was sometimes called so, for he exhorted). He was ashamed of it, and undertook to make an apology, saying, "The black rascals stayed so long that I got so dry I could not help it. You know that niggers will be niggers, roasted or biled."

....Daniel Van Barkelo lived to an advanced age. In his will, dated Oct.25, 1798 and proved Dec. 7, 1801, he mentioned his wife Mary and 14 children by name. To the former (Mary) he bequeathed his farm, known as the OLD HOMESTEAD, and also his barn, out-houses, all farming utensils, livestock, and a wood lot. In the event of her death or remarriage these items were to go to his youngest son Stoffel; his sons William and Cornelius were to inherit the place on which the former (Mary) then lived. All the remainder of his real and personal estate was to be divided equally among the other eleven children. The executors were Farnton (Farrington) and Stoffel Barkelo, and son-in-law Hendrick Van Dike. (NJA:39:30-31). On Sept. 2, 1805, the inventory of his widow, Mary's estate was taken by Aaron Cowling and Barent Johnson, and was sworn to by Stoffel Barkelo, administrator (ibid).
