Cornelis Verhoeven (°1875, +1924) van Zondereigen kreeg in het begin van de Eerste Wereldoorlog een pas om te voet naar Baarle te gaan. Hij verdiende 20 frank per jaar als gemeenteraadslid. Zijn boerderij op Gel stond het dichtst bij de electrische draadversperring, waardoor er bij hem Duitse soldaten werden ingekwartierd. In de kelderkamer stonden twee bedden. De soldaten zaten bij het open vuur in de boerderij. Zoontje Jan sprak een aardig woordje Duits omdat de soldaten veel tegen hem bezig waren. Cornelis had meermaals problemen met de legerleiding. Zo werd geeëist dat hij de weg beter zou onderhouden. Er bleven teveel plassen staan na een regenbui. Cornelis sprak dat tegen en werd een tijdlang opgesloten in ’t Zwart Goorin Merksplas, toen het hoofdkwartier van de Duitsers. Negen maanden lang woonden er soldaten bij Verhoeven thuis, tot de overste vond dat zij te ver van de draad logeerden. Toen werd een barak vlakbij de draad opgericht.
