Zijn moeder moemde hem Roeffien.
Hij kocht van zijn eerstverdiende geld een scheerkwast voor zijn vader.
Heeft gewoond o.a. op de Volendammerweg 11 in Tuindorp Nieuwendam.
Hij toen hij Barendina leerde kennen werkte hij bij Blom, tandwielfabriek (Amsterdamse Tandwielen fabriek)
fabriek was gevestingd in de derde Wittenburgerstraat, later verhuisd in plm 1938 naar
Nieuwe Jonker en Ridderstraat.(Asd centrum, achter de Lastageweg).

Op het uitbreken van de eerste oorlogsdag van de tweede wereldoorlog ging Barendina Hoffmans
heel vroeg naar de Nieuwe Zijds Voorburgwal om in een zgn. leeskast die daar opgehangen was
het nieuws over de oorlog in de opgehangen krant te lezen. Onderweg ontmoette zij Roelof ten Klei
en zijn zij samen opgelopen van de Lastageweg naar de Nieuwe Zijds en hebben wat onderweg
gebabbeld. Roelof had haar eerder gezien en had al een oogje op haar, want woonde aan de overkant
op de Lastageweg.

Een paar maanden later ontmoetten zij elkaar aan het Noord-Hollands kanaal (asd. noord).
En waar Barendina aan met een vriendin aan het zwemmen was.
Roelof vroeg haar om een cigaret want hij had geen geld meer en kreeg ereen.
Daarna zagen zij elkaar regelmatiger. Roelof verdiende toen vier gulden tachtig cent in de week.
Zijn schoonmoeder vroeg hem voor het huwlijk of hij een costuum had. Hij had een confectieopak,
maar dat was niet genoeg.
Hij werd meegenomen en er werd stof gekocht (Engels kamgaren) voor 20 gulden en in
de Goudsbloemstraat werd bij een kleermaker er een pak van gemaakt voor vijfentwintig gulden.
Met dat costuum deed hij de hele oorlog.

Werd 3 januari 1978 toeziend voogd over zijn neef Almer ten Klei.
