    Moeder en kind bij Emmen verdronken.
    Dinsdagmorgen omstreeks elf uur heeft men in een der zijwijken van het Scholtenskanaal te Klazienaveen-Noord bij Emmen een levenloos lichaampje aangetroffen van een ruim éénjarig kind. In de nabijheid trof men een pakje brood aan hetgeen aanleiding gaf tot een verder onderzoek. Ruim een uur later werd het levenloze lichaam van de moeder opgehaald met een fiets. De moeder, de negentienjarige M.G. Strijker-Herbers is, voor zover nagegaan kan worden, met haar ruim één-jarig kind voor op de fiets ´s morgens om zeven uur van de ouderlijke woning vertrokken om te gaan aardappelrooien. Onderweg moet zij met het kind in de wijk zijn geraakt en verdronken. (Bron: Leeuwarder Courant 15 september 1954),
