Arend woonde eerst in Zwartemeer, waar hij een prekend bestaan heeft geleid. Hij werkte eerst in de turf zoals vele anderen, maar verdiende het zout in de pap nog niet. Met hard werken verdiende hij 11 gulden in de week, maar als hij in de steun was, dan had hij slechts 6 gulden. Er werd hem een baan aangeboden in de wegenbouw. Daar vediende hij 24 gulden per week, en dan het hele jaar door. Het enige nadeel was, dat hij dan in de kost moest. Arend mocht één keer in de zes weken een dag of wat naar huis, later werd dit elke twee weken.
In 1929 kreeg hij een huis in Deurne, Brabant. Het gezin verhuisde er op 20 november heen. Na 7 jaar in Deurne moest hij weer in de kost, maar zijn vrouw wilde dat niet meer. Hij kreeg toen een salonwagen van zijn baas aangeboden. Inmiddels was Arend uitvoerder geworden, en zijn gezin trok in de salonwagen met hem mee. Hij heeft zo in half Nederland rond gezworven. Toen de oorlog uitbrak woonde hij in Smilde en heeft daar ook nog meegeholpen bij de aanleg van de TT-baan. In 1941 is hij naar Epe, Gelderland verhuisd en heeft daar de oorlogsjaren doorgebracht.

Op het gemeentehuis in Emmen heeft een Duitse ambtenaar de naam Schoneville gebruikt. De kinderen zijn zo ook aangegeven, en het gezin komt ook onder die naam in de persoonskaarten voor. Tot op heden is de naam zo gebleven. Het is een tamelijk unieke naam. Er zijn maar een handjevol mensen die Schoneville heten. Bron:- het boek "Van Schone Wille Zijn".
