    Ich bin der Sohn des 1916 in Barmen (jetzt Wuppertal) geborenen Erwin
    Schelenhaus. Ich weiss, dass alle Schelenhäuser miteinander verwandt
    sind. Es gibt weltweit nur etwa 20 mit diesem Namen. Eigene
    Nachforschungen haben ergeben, dass der Familienname auf einen nach Köln
    geflohenen Hugenotten "Shele" oder "Schele" zurückgehen. Dieser
    Hugenotte konvertierte zum Katholizismus und trat in den Dienst des
    Kölner Erzbischofs ein. Bei diesem wurde er wohl Gutsverwalter dessen
    privater Ländereien, dem "Elferfelde"- den elf Feldern. Hierauf geht die
    Stadt Elberfeld zurück, die seit 1929 ein Stadtteil von Wuppertal ist.
    Der Bischof vermachte dem Gutsverwalter einen eigenen kleinen Bauernhof
    im Norden von Barmen, welches "Schelenhaus" genannt wurde. Ich weiss
    dies aus einer amerikanischen Dissertation über die
    Hugenottenverfolgungen. Dieser Bauernhof wurde bis zur industriellen
    Revolution ca. 1860 von der Familie Schelenhaus geführt. Noch heute gibt
    es im Norden Wuppertals einen Bezirk, der Schelenhauser Busch genannt
    wird.
