De 1e dorpsveldwachter van Schoonebeek Johannes Jacobus Kraat was de eerste dorpsveldwachter van het zelfstandige Schoonebeek.
Hij werd in 1824 in Vlissingen geboren en solliciteerde in 1863 als sergeant bij het Algemeen depot van discipline te Wildervank naar de betrekking van veldwachter van de gemeente Dalen.

De inlichtingen waren gunstig en de omstandigheid,dat hij,,een goede hand schrijft,, strekte zeer tot aanbeveling.

Zo werd Johannes Kraat,eens belast met de bewaking van millitaire gevangenen,op 26 mei 1863 door het gemeentebestuur van Dalen benoemd. Hij kreeg als standplaats: Schoonebeek
Dertig jaar lang zou hij hier orde en rust bewaren en wie hem hier ziet staan,ontkomt niet aan de indruk dat hem dat wel toevertrouwd was.

Gekleed in een jas van donkerblauw laken met twee rijen geele metalen knoopen,een broek van dezelfde kleur met lichtblauw bies en de pet met de zwart-lederen klep en stormbanden op het hoofd was hij inderdaad een gezag uitstralende verschijning.

Voor de gedraaide houten stok zullen de kwajongens ongetwijfeld een heilig ontzag gehad hebben.

Johannes Jacobus Kraat stierf op 11 juni 1893 en werd in Schoonebeek begraven.

Naar aanleiding van zijn overlijden en de hieruit voortvloeiende noodzaak een nieuwe veldwachter te benoemen,hield burgemeester Dommers in de gemeenteraad een pleidooi voor het instellen van een pensioenfonds ten bate van de gemeenteveldwachter.
Ten einde daaruit voor dezen,bij ontslag wegens ziekte,of gebleken ongeschiktheid voor de dienst eenige tegemoetkoming in zijn levensonderhoud kunnen worden getrokken.

Een van gemeentewege ingestelde pensioenregeling was er uiteraard toen nog niet voor Henderika Klein,de achtergebleven weduwe. Zij vertrok een jaar later naar Tiel.
