Notes about Leendert Voorhaar (ook Verhaar)

In diverse bronnen wordt gesproken van Leendert Verhaar. In de overlijdensakte van zijn zoon Philippus staat echter Leendert Voorhaar. Ook bij andere personen eind 18e, begin 19e eeuw komen deze namen naast elkaar voor. Zelfs binnen aktes waar de naam Verhaar staat vermeld maar de persoon zelf tekent met Voorhaar.

Pieter Hartog voegt op zijn stamboom op internet over Leendert de volgende informatie toe:
Geboorte: De meeste doopinschrijvingen van voor 1766 zijn verloren gegaan, als gevolg van een brand dat jaar die alle DTB boeken van de hervormde gemeente Hilversum vernietigde. Wel is zeker vast te stellen dat de familie Verhaar-Voorhaar van origine uit Hilversum kwam en gereformeerd was

Leendert is waarschijnlijk wever geweest, een activiteit die in de 18e eeuw een hoge vlucht nam in het vrij arme Hilversum. In de Gooise dorpen werden koedekken, dweilen en andere grove artikelen geweven. In het midden van de 18e eeuw was er in Hilversum een procedé ontdekt om van koehaar tapijt te weven. In 1808 waren er in Hilversum maar liefst 26 tapijtfabrieken. Door de afscheiding van België in 1830 vielen in deze industrie harde klappen en liep het aantal fabrieken terug tot 15.
Overigens moet men zich van de omvang van deze bedrijven geen overdreven voorstelling maken: er werkten alles bij elkaar 171 arbeiders. Veel arbeid werd nog in de vorm van huisindustrie gedaan. Vooral in de wintermaanden, wanneer de boerderij minder aandacht vroeg, kaarden de boerengezinnen wol en sponnen zij garen. Kinderarbeid kwam daarbij veel voor.
