Het echtpaar van Diepen-Schouten betrok een boerderij op de 'Ouwedik' te Westwoud. Er kwamen geen kinderen. Wel was er een pleegkind: Cor Schipper, die met Alida Buis huwde.

Cor Schipper was de verzetsleider van het Westwoudse verzet. Hij bood onderduikers onderdak in zijn boerderij en regelde de distributie van bonkaarten.De bekende verzetsheld uit Westwoud - Samuel Wijtema [1905-1944]- had hem gevraagd deel te nemen aan het plaatselijke verzet. Hij werd gearresteerd op 1 juli 1944 nadat een onderduiker bij een razzia zijn onderduikadres opgeeft. Het Westwoudse verzet vreesde dat hij onder druk de namen en plaatsen van de verzetsgroep zou bekend maken. De overige leden doken onder en onderduikers werden verplaats. Er volgde geen verdere arrestaties. Cor Schipper werd overbracht naar Amsterdam en later naar kamp Vught. In het Duitse concentratiekamp Sachsenhausen overleed hij op 31 oktober 1944.]

Er was ook een Duits pleegkind nl. Julia Krone, thans Mevrouw Nieuwendijk, woonachtig in Hilversum.

In 1942 bracht Aaltje Schouten het op om op 66-jarige leeftijd Nel van Diepen (geb.21-2-1940; dochter van Arie van Diepen en Neeltje Klaver) ; liefdevol te verzorgen en groot te brengen. Nel was 2 jaar oud en vond na haar moeders overlijden een nieuw tehuis in de 'Ouwedik'
