Samen met twee bootsgezellen, Jan Borgersz. en Jan Jacobsz.|Kagenaer verscheen hij vervolgens bij het lokale gerecht om daar de hoeveelheid|gevangen haring aan te geven. In de daaropvolgende jaren kon Jacob zijn beroep,|stuurman op een haringschip, niet uitoefenen. Als gevolg van de oorlog met de|Engelsen bleven de Maassluise haringschepen in de haven liggen. Dit had niet|alleen met het gevaar van de Engelse kapers te maken, maar ook met het beleid|dat in de Republiek gevoerd werd. Normaal gesproken had de Admiraliteit geen|moeite haar schepen te bemannen, maar in oorlogstijden dreigde er een arbeidstekort|te ontstaan. Om dit tekort op te kunnen vangen vaardigden de Staten Generaal|een verbod uit op het uitvaren van vissers- en koopvaardijschepen. De tijdelijk|van hun werk beroofde zeelieden werden op deze manier min of meer gedwongen|om dienst te nemen op één van de oorlogsschepen. Of Jacob Pietersz. van|der Jacht zijn vissersschip daadwerkelijk voor een oorlogsschip heeft verruild, valt|niet te achterhalen. Zeker is dat een aantal van zijn plaatsgenoten de overstap wel|waagde. Hoe het gezin Van der Jacht, in 1666 naast Jacob bestaand uit een vrouw|en twee kinderen, moest rondkomen zonder de inkomsten van de kostwinner.
