Volgens bevolkingsregister Amsterdam heeft Jochem met zijn gezin in Amsterdam gewoond van 20 nov.1890 tot juni 1891.

Volgens bevolkingsregistratie Blokzijl is Jochem op 12 April 1916 verhuist naar de Koninklijke Militaire Inrichting "Bronbeek"alwaar hij op 11-09-1917 is overleden.
Hij is dus ongetwijfeld militair geweest, hoewel hij op de huwelijksactie vermeld staat als: Mattenmaker.

Volgens Stamboek gegevens in het "Nationaal Archief" is Jochem op 4 juni 1881 ingedeeld bij het 3e Reg.Infanterie, als plaatsvervanger van een andere soldaat die met groot verlof ging.
Op 2 aug 1883 is Jochem als vrijwilliger een verbintenis aangegaan voor zes jaren bij het KNIL.
Op 12 jan 1884 is hij vervolgens aangekomen in Batavia, waar hij in de volgende jaren bij diverse krijgsverrichtingen betrokken is geweest, onder meer in 1884 en 1885 in Atjeh.
Op 30 oktober 1886 is hij wegens tijdelijke lichamelijke ongeschiktheid, afgekeurd en heeft hij toestemming gekregen om naar Nederland terug te keren.
Op 17 jan 1887 is hij vervolgens met het schip de "Noord Brabant" aangekomen in Rotterdam, waarna hij op 5 maart 1887 in Harderwijk de militaire dienst heeft verlaten.

Hij is vervolgens terug gekeerd naar Blokzijl alwaar hij op 25 nov. 1887 is getrouwd met weduwe Geertje Ottenhof.
