Als molenbaas op een baggerschip verhuisde Jan met echtgenote en 3 kinderen naar Nederlandsch Indië. Het gezin reisde in 1930 per stoomschip ' Prins der Nederlanden' en arriveerde (via een tussenstop in de haven van Sabang (Sumatra)) op 07 mei 1930 op de eindbestemming Belawan (Sumatra). Jan werkte als tin-baggeraar op Banka-Billiton, gelegen tussen Sumatra en Borneo.

De Billiton Maatschappij
In 1850 besloten twee Nederlandse barons om het eiland Billiton te gaan verkennen, omdat zij verwachtten dat er daar net zulke waardevolle bodemschatten zouden zijn als op Banka. De barons, Wolter Robert van Hoëvell en Vincent Gildemeester van Tuyll van Serooskerken, stuurden een verkenner naar het eiland. Die kwam echter terug met de mededeling: “Het is zeker, dat het eiland Billiton geen tinerts in zijn bodem bevat.” Een jaar later nam baron Van Tuyll echter toch zelf maar een kijkje, en binnen enkele uren vond hij al tin. Samen met twee kompanen besloot hij de tinerts op Billiton te gaan ontginnen. In 1852 werd de concessie aan baron Van Tuyll verleend, blijkens het bijblad van de Nederlandsche Staats-Courant 1852-1853.

De eerste jaren verliepen de zaken op Billiton slecht. Vele lokale en Chinese koelies werden ziek of overleden. Baron Van Tuyll was volgens zijn kompanen ongeschikt voor de leiding van het bedrijf. Om de problemen het hoofd te bieden werd in 1860 een naamloze vennootschap opgericht om een en ander te structureren, de Billiton Maatschappij NV.

Zowel op Banka als op Billiton werden ook later nog veel Chinese koelies gebruikt. De Nederlanders gaven ook leidinggevende functies aan de Chinezen, en in 1920 was bijna de helft van de bevolking van Banka-Billiton van Chinese afkomst.

De Billiton Maatschappij stopte al in 1958 met de tinwinning in Indonesië, en is op dat moment onder andere actief in Suriname. Later is de Billiton Maatschappij in 1970 overgenomen door Shell. De ontwikkeling gaat daarna snel en er worden activiteiten gestart in bijvoorbeeld Brazilië, Australië en Canada. In 2001 is het bedrijf gefuseerd met het Australische Broken Hill Proprietary tot BHP Billiton.
