Bijna tien jaar liep Professor Pi door de absurde en krankzinnige wereld rondom hem. Zwijgend en scherp observerend, vaak licht verbaasd.

Zoals die keer dat hij op straat ontdekt hoe de voorgevel van een gebouw is verwijderd, ten gunste van een volle schouwburgzaal. Schijnwerpers belichten het trottoir. De straat is het toneel geworden.
Of die keer dat hij een heer op een paard door de stad ziet rijden. Voor hem haalt een lakei de tegels uit de stoep, zodat het dier in het zand kan lopen. Achter het paard plaatsen twee lakeien de tegels terug. Professor Pi staat er wat beduusd bij.

Watersnoodramp
Tussen 1957 en 1966 tekende Bob van den Born voor Het Parool 2929 strips over Professor Pi. Vooral het establishment moest het ontgelden. In de krasserige en expressionistische tekeningen zette hij met onderscheidingen behangen militairen en met juwelen beladen dames op cocktailparty's te kakken.

Na een opleiding tot tekenleraar en zijn diensttijd in Indonesië (waar hij als hospik op de afdeling geslachtsziekten in het ziekenhuis van Bandoeng werkte) klopte Van den Born in 1952 aan bij Het Parool. Hij begon met tekeningen bij reportages.

"Ik ben zelfs nog in 1953 naar Zeeland geweest om de watersnoodramp te tekenen," vertelde hij in een interview. Dat reportagetekenen was niet echt wat voor Van den Born, die het liefst in zijn eentje werkte.

Cartoons
Op locatie kon hij zich 'met al dat gewoel' maar moeilijk concentreren. Hij besloot zich op cartoons te richten. Het Parool zag aanvankelijk niet veel in Professor Pi, maar toen Van den Born de strips wel in Engeland, Spanje en een vaag Chinees blaadje geplaatst kreeg, werd de krant ook enthousiast.

Toen Van den Born in 1966 ophield met de strip, was Professor Pi ook in het buitenland een geliefd figuur. Hij verscheen onder meer in Spaanse, Italiaanse en Scandinavische kranten. In de Amerikaanse World Encyclopedia of Comics staat dat de strip de lezers in de ban hield met 'zijn inzicht, zijn geestigheid en zijn grenzeloze verbeeldingskracht'.

Van den Born stopte met Professor Pi omdat hij het 'een beetje zat' was. "Het werd zo moeizaam," vertelde hij in een interview in 1992. "Op het laatst nam ik er woordenboeken bij om een onderwerp te verzinnen."

Karikaturen van politici
Na Professor Pi gooide de tekenaar het over een andere boeg. Hij boetseerde karikaturen van politici, die hij vervolgens fotografeerde en verkocht aan kranten en tijdschriften. Deze karikaturen belandden uiteindelijk ook in Madame Tussauds.

In 1973 begon hij ook te schilderen. Toch bleven mensen hem vooral kennen als striptekenaar. "Het is curieus," zei hij in 1992, toen de strip al 26 jaar niet meer verscheen. "Er zijn mensen die nu nog zeggen: 'Bent u die Van den Born van Professor Pi in Het Parool?' Dat vind ik wel leuk, als het niet te vaak gebeurt. Het heeft toch meer indruk gemaakt dan ik wist op het moment dat het werd gepubliceerd."

Vlak daarna begon de krant met het dagelijks herpubliceren van de strips, van 1993 tot 1998.

Nieuwe werelden
Van den Born heeft altijd gezegd dat het leven voor hem weinig zin had als hij niet meer zou kunnen werken. Toen hij vanwege de ouderdom de kracht niet meer had om te schilderen, verruilde hij het penseel voor de muis.

Afbeeldingen die hij online vond bewerkte hij met zijn computer tot wonderlijke, nieuwe werelden. Totdat dat ook niet meer ging. Een paar weken geleden riep hij, weduwnaar sinds 2014, zijn familie bij elkaar.

Maandagmiddag overleed Bob van den Born op 90-jarige leeftijd in zijn kamer in het Rosa Spier Huis in Laren. Hij laat drie zoons, een dochter en drie kleinkinderen na.
