    Het ss Costa Rica van de KNSM, ging in het oostelijk deel van de Middellandse Zee verloren.
    De Costa Rica was één van de schepen die was aangewezen bij de evacuatie van Griekenland om troepen te verplaatsen van Kalamatta naar Alexandrie. Onmiddellijk na vertrek van genoemde haven om 06:00 uur werd het schip door vijandelijke vliegtuigen aangevallen. De aanvallen hielden zonder onderbreking aan tot in de namiddag, toen vlak bij het schip een bom explodeerde, die aan bakboord een gat in de huid veroorzaakte waardoor het schip zonk. Aan boord bevonden zich ongeveer 2800 man troepen en 200 man equipage. Allen slaagden erin de begeleidende Engelse oorlogschepen te bereiken, die de schipbreukelingen in Kreta aan land zetten. Deze ramp vond plaats op 26 april 1941

    Jan ten Kloooster is overleden op 26 mei 1941 in de Rode Zee aan boord van een Engels marineschip en heeft daar een zeemansgraf gekregen. Hij is overleden aan een hartaanval enkele dagen nadat zijn schip de “ss Costa Rica”, waarvan hij gezagvoerder was, door de Duitsers bij Kreta tot zinken was gebracht. Dat schip was als troepentransportschip ingezet om engelse militairen van Kreta weg te halen. Er zijn op het schip geen slachtoffers gevallen.
    Voor zijn inzet heeft hij postuum een hoge engelse onderscheiding ontvangen, Distinguished Service Order (DSO), Orde van verdienste.
