1px; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;">Op de middag van 20 september 1944 opent in Lent een woedende SS-er het vuur op - in zijn ogen - defaitistische Oostenrijkse soldaten in Duitse dienst. De SS-er treft daarbij ook de burgers, die voor het oorlogsgeweld schuilen in de tunnel (in het verlengde van het voormalige Molenpad, nu Parallelweg) onder de spoorlijn Arnhem - Nijmegen. Drie of vier burgers vinden als gevolg hiervan de dood, en twintig raken er gewond, onder wie mevrouw Henriëtte Span-Burgers.

Op 6 november 1944 plaatst haar echtgenoot een rouwadvertentie in De Gelderlander. Hij vermeldt echter niet de oorzaak van haar overlijden, maar omschrijft dit slechts met de woorden "noodlottig ongeval".
