    Een mooi voorbeeld van een carrière in vorstelijke dienst van een kleine ambachtsheer uit de bestuurselite van Zierikzee is Klaas Lievensz, gehuwd met Gertrude Florisdr van Botland, die in Zeeland verschillende stedelijke en regionale ambten vervulde voor zijn benoeming tot raadsheer van het Hof van Holland in 1511. In 1492 was zijn adeldom bevestigd door Maximiliaan van Oostenrijk en hij voerde vervolgens de ridderlijke titel schildknaap en de familienaam Van Kats.[68] Zijn gestegen status bleek uit het huwelijk tussen zijn oudste dochter Lievine en een hoge Bourgondische ambtenaar, de ontvanger-generaal en ridder Jan Micault.
    Ridderslagen of adelsbrieven waren in de late middeleeuwen de meest gangbare manieren om het adellijke statuut te verwerven en van de vorst om zijn trouwe ambtenaren te belonen, maar de frequentie hiervan – zeker van de ridderslagen op het slagveld – nam in de vijftiende eeuw af.[69]
