Notes about Jacob Philips Josephs "(Jacob de Jode)" Halevie-Wittmund

De eerste Joden vestigden zich rond 1645 in het Friesland van stadhouder Willem Frederik van Nassau en Albertine Agnes.
Recent onderzoek, door schrijver dezes, gepubliceerd in het Amerikaans Joods Genealogische blad Avotaynu (herfst 2004), heeft de identiteit onthuld van Jacob de Joode, de man die in 1670 de begraafplaats stichtte.

Dit blijkt een zoon te zijn van Mozes Ury HaLevy, de Emdense rabbijn die in 1602 naar Amsterdam kwam en aldaar de eerste Spaanse en Portugese Joden onderrichtte in de Joodse gewoonten en gebruiken.

Dat was nodig omdat zij sinds 1492 hun Jood-zijn niet meer openlijk hadden kunnen belijden vanwege de bedreigingen van de Inquisitie.
Naast de familie Jacobson zijn ook de in Leeuwarden wat bekendere familie Dwinger naar alle waarschijnlijkheid afstammelingen van deze Jacob de Joode.

die in 1664 burgerrecht krijgt in Workum.
Jacob de Joode was de zoon van Moshe Ury HaLevy, de bekende Emdense rabbijn.

Daar staat beschreven het volgende:
Het stedelijk Archief van Leeuwarden vermeld voor het eerst een Joodse inwoner in het jaar 1670.
Bij resolutie van 22-7-1670 werd aan Jacob de Jode met zijn Familie en een neef uit Collem (Abraham Davids Workum)
de lege plaats achter de flits geconsenteerd tot begravenis des jaarlijks betalende 5 ggls tot revocatie.
Dit was een stukje grond tegen de wal in de Boterhoek in Leeuwarden.
