    Afgelopen maandag is sportverslaggever Nico Jessen overleden. Jessen werkte decennialang voor de Limburgse radio omroep ROZ en later L1. In die hoedanigheid deed hij de radioverslagen van Fortuna Sittard. Vele fans zullen zijn gezicht niet kennen, maar zijn stem uit duizenden herkennen.
    Jessen was een groot Fortuna supporter en liet dat ook doorschemeren in zijn verslaggeving. Vele Fortunafans die nu de tribunes bevolken, zullen ooit aangestoken zijn met het Fortuna virus door de verslaggeving van Nico Jessen. Ballen die in werkelijkheid meters naast vlogen, schampten volgens Jessen de paal. Toch stond zijn voorliefde voor Fortuna hem nooit in de weg om na afloop de juiste conclusie te trekken over de vraag of de uitslag terecht was.
    Jessen was een van de laatste verslaggevers die in staat was om de luisteraar gekluisterd te krijgen aan de radio. En dat in een tijd dat de radio de strijd met de TV al lang en breed heeft verloren. Misschien wel zijn grootste verdienste.
    Jessen worstelde al lange tijd met een slechte gezondheid. Die strijd verloor hij dus eerder deze week. Jessen werd 65 jaar.
