een fragment uit de historische Vereniging Hasselt:

Het weeshuis werd met alle bezittingen in 1797 aan de heer P.D. Suerdfeger verkocht. Van deze persoon viel niet veel te achterhalen, maar wel het volgende bericht: In 1803 verkochten de erfgenamen van burgemeester Gerrit Bode aan Reinier v.d. Vecht hun huis waar aan de ene zijde P.D. Suerdfeger woonde. Het pand van Reinier v.d. Vecht, was Hoogstraat 40, dus Hoogstraat 42 en 44 komen in aanmerking als Weeshuizen. Door de eeuwen heen moesten de bewoners van Hoogstraat 40 ook recht van uitgang aan de wezen betalen. Dit pand was aldoor familiebezit vanaf 1740. Eerst woonde er burgemeester Jacobus van Zuylen, later zijn schoonzoon burgemeester Gerrit Bode en later weer diens schoonzoon Reinier v.d. Vecht. Een familieportret hiervan (misschien wel in hun woning geschilderd) hangt in het gemeentehuis.

Links van dit huis ziet u een open ruimte. Dit kan kloppen. Naast het pand van burgemeester Van Zuylen stond vroeger een pand die "De Ekkelboom" heette. Dit pand werd afgebroken en er werden bomen geplant.
