In 1986 richtte het echtpaar Ab van der Burgt en Rita van der Burgt-Blaauw van Os te ’s-Hertogenbosch de Theodorus Zwartkruis Stichting op. Theodorus Henricus Johannes Zwartkruis (1909 -1983) was van 1966 tot 1983 bisschop van het bisdom Haarlem.
De Stichting had tot doel de naam en idealen van mgr. Zwartkruis levend te houden en de dragers van het cultureel erfgoed van de kerk te stimuleren. Daartoe werd de Bisschop Zwartkruis Prijs ingesteld. Deze prijs (een ring en een geldbedrag) zou toegekend worden aan een persoon uit de geloofsgemeenschap die op cultureel gebied uitblinkt door creativiteit, humaniteit en verdraagzaamheid. De prijs is twee keer uitgereikt, in 1989 aan Rex Brico en in 1991 aan Michel van der Plas.
