Toen Rietje twee jaar oud was, raakte bij een valpartij een zenuw in haar linkerheup door een botsplinter bekneld. Als gevolg hiervan bracht zij haar jeugd door in bed: eerst tweeënhalf jaar in een ziekenhuis, daarna ruim zeven jaren thuis, platliggend in een gipsen korset in de voorkamer. Deze diepingrijpende behandelwijze kon echter niet voorkomen dat zij de rest van haar leven mank zou blijven lopen.

Op haar ziekbed had Rietje, zo goed en zo kwaad als het ging, met de hulp van familieleden lager onderwijs gevolgd. Toen zij op haar twaalfde mocht opstaan, bezocht zij eerst nog anderhalf jaar lang de lagere school. In 1933 werd zij arbeidster, onder meer in een wolspinnerij en in een deken- en beddenfabriek. Het loon dat zij daar verdiende, was thuis hard nodig, omdat haar vader inmiddels werkloos was geworden. Als vijftienjarige werd zij opgenomen in het Eerste Leidsche Klucht en Revue Gezelschap van Nard Boer. In dit amateur-ensemble, waarin ook enkelen van haar broers en zusters optraden, werd haar stem opgemerkt en begon haar zangcarrière.
