De oudste vormen van menselijke bebouwing zijn uit 2500 v. Chr. uit de Enkel Grafcultuur, waarvan overblijfselen gevonden zijn in de polder rond Winkel. Winkel kreeg stadsrechten in 1248 en het stederecht in 1415, waarvan nu het Regthuis uit 1600 nog over is dat vroeger dienst deed als waag en raadhuis. De hervormde Lucaskerk is gebouwd in 1845, maar het slaguurwerk is 650 jaar oud en het is van de oudste nog werkende slaguurwerk van dat type.

Algemene notities: Volgens de "Lijste off quohier van alle de familien off huyshouden geen contribuabele persoonen, onder de jurisdictie van Winkel met desselfs professie, ampt, neringe en wijse van bestaan" d.d. 26-03-1742 woonde de wed. Cornelis Langereijs met 3 kinderen aan de Zijdesloot nr. 90 (12); verponding f.1.10.0.
