Kleindochter Gré kent de historie: "Jan gaf bij zijn sollicitatie op de gasfabriek een leeftijd op die 10 jaar te laag was. Dit 'bedrog' kwam pas uit bij zijn pensionering. Jan was inderdaad een flinke vent. Hij zag er goed uit." Of hij die 10 jaar extra doorwerkte, vertelt het verhaal niet. Het zou kunnen, gelet op het ontbreken van pensioenvoorzieningen in die tijd. Hij woonde laatstelijk met zijn Jannetje in de Bremstraat (A'dam) en werd bijna 87 jaar. Het echtpaar bleef 64 jaar getrouwd!
