    Neuengamme is een dorp dichtbij Hamburg in Duitsland. Het zou een onbekend dorp zijn, ware het niet dat daar tijdens de oorlogsjaren 1940 – 1945 een oord van verschrikking was; het concentratiekamp Neuengamme. Dat was één van de grote concentratiekampen in Nazi-Duitsland, een kamp met meer dan tachtig buitenkampen, verspreid over heel Noord-Duitsland.

    In dat concentratiekamp Neuengamme hebben veel niet-joodse Nederlanders gevangen gezeten, meer dan in enig ander concentratiekamp in Nazi-Duitsland. Toch is dat concentratiekamp in ons land nauwelijks bekend, bij velen zelfs totaal onbekend. Bij anderen roept de naam Neuengamme herinneringen op, herinneringen aan dood, vernedering en ellende. Ook Neuengamme hoort bij die lange schaduwen van de laatste wereldoorlog.
