    Het stadsarchief van Amsterdam geeft als zijn geboortedatum 8-8-1786 aan, maar dat is niet juist. Hij is een jaar eerder geboren, op 8-8-1785, zo blijkt uit archief-onderzoek. Joseph Heinrich Devers was werkman en winkelier. Volgens zijn huwelijksakte is hij in Hauten, Düsseldorf in Duitsland geboren. Het stadsarchief Amsterdam geeft echter Xanten als zijn geboorteplaats, wat veel waarschijnlijker is. In Amsterdam woonde hij aan de Anjelierstraat, de Smallepadsgracht, het Kwakersdwarspad en de Goudsbloemstraat. In Nederland stond hij bekend onder de naam Josephus Henricus Devers.
