Notes about Neekus Roskam

Op 20 augustus 1934 verkocht de familie ter Haar het hotel "De Stad Groningen” aan Neekus Roskam, bierbottelaar en visverkoper te Zwartsluis, gewoond hebbende vlak bij de Arembergersluis. Sindsdien is de naam van het hotel veranderd in hotel Roskam. Inmiddels was in 1934 de tramlijn opgeheven en werd de nieuwe weg achter het hotel aangelegd - ook al omdat de doorgang langs het koetshuis vrij smal was. In deze periode werd ook op de plek van de veranda de nieuwe serre aangebouwd.

Na het overlijden van Neekus Roskam in 1941 werd de zaak voortgezet door zijn weduwe Ietske en zijn zoon Neekus Roskam jr. In deze periode werd de grote bovenzaal verbouwd tot woning van Neekus jr. en zijn gezin.

Op 15 november 1948 overleed Neekus Roskam jr. en zijn vrouw Sjoukje Roskam-Glastra zette de zaak voort, totdat haar zwager Jaap Heetebrij in 1949 de zaak definitief overnam. Deze was oorspronkelijk onderwijzer en gehuwd met Saar Roskam, de oudste dochter van Roskam sr. Hij had altijd al een zwak voor het cafébedrijf en assisteerde reeds vele malen de familie op drukke dagen in het bedrijf.

Tijdens de periode Heetebrij werd een gedeelte van de oude paardenstal aan de achterzijde opgeofferd voor de uitbouw van een grotere zaal in 1953. Uiteindelijk verdween de familie Heetebrij weer naar het onderwijs en de zaak werd overgenomen door de heer Rozema uit Nieuw Amsterdam in 1956. In deze tijd was het niet erg druk in het hotelbedrijf.
