eghe, medestichter van schuttersclub De Kluiscarabiniers en van wielerclub De Scheldetrappers, is overleden. Hij werd 86. De Kluiscarabiniers bestaan in 2017 net vijftig jaar. Met wielerclub De Scheldetrappers uit Ruien werden hoogdagen gevierd met onder meer tweemaal het Belgisch kampioenschap cyclocross op de Kluisberg in 1969 en 1971. De club organiseerde in 1977 ook de profwedstrijd waar Eddy Merckx zijn laatste overwinning behaalde.


 


 


Gilbert begon zijn loopbaan in de ouderlijke beenhouwerij in de Kapellestraat in Ruien, waarna hij in 1954 samen met zijn echtgenote Marie-Louise Vandewalle naar Congo vertrok om er in Thijsstad een bakkerij en beenhouwerij/vleeshandel op te starten. Door de moeilijkheden na de onafhankelijkheid van Congo in 1960 keerden ze naar België terug. In 1966 was hij de stichter en uitbater van de Camping Panorama op de Kluisberg. Gilbert was ook een bekend figuur was in de duivensport. De uitvaart vindt plaats nu zaterdag om 11 uur in de Sint-Corneliskerk van Ruien.
