Na de dood van haar man werd ze gedwongen haar plaats op de eerste rij van de kerk op te geven hetgeen ze weigerde.

De kerkenraad kwam hierdoor in een hachelijke situatie en stelde voor de preekstoel naar achteren te plaatsen om zo ruimte te maken voor een extra rij stoelen. Na heftige discussie werd echter besloten de stoelen dichter bij elkaar te plaatsen om zo ruimte te maken voor een extra rij stoelen.

Het irrigatiewater voor haar tuin begon te langzaam stromen om goed water te geven voor haar tuin. Op haar aandringen werd de reden hiervan onderzocht en het bleek dat dit werd veroorzaakt door vuil in de sloot. De andere boeren werden verplicht om hun slaven te sturen om de sloot voor haar schoon te maken.

Op 31 mei 1822 werd haar huis openbaar verkocht voor 25.000 gulden en zij vertrok naar Worchester.
