Pie Diederen werd geboren op 8 juni 1911 te Puth en door
mgr. Lemmens in Roermond tot priester gewijd op 13
maart 1937. Als jongste kapelaan begon hij zijn loopbaan
onder moeilijke omstandigheden in het toenmalige mijnwerkersdorp
Eijgelshoven. In het toen 6000 inwoners tellende
dorp werkten naast Nederlanders ook Duitsers,
Polen, Slovenen, Hongaren en Belgen in de mijnen Laura
en Julia. Vijftien jaar lang was kapelaan Diederen te midden
van hen werkzaam in de zielzorg. Deze jaren vergden
ontzettend veel van zijn gezondheid en het was goed voor
hem dat hij in een rustigere parochie te werk werd
gesteld. Ontelbaar veel dankbare mensen uit Eijgelshoven
drukten hem de hand bij zijn vertrek. In april 1953 tot
rector benoemd van de H. Jacobus de Meerdere parochie
in Egchel, mocht hij hier verder bouwen op de fundamenten,
die rector Thomassen in dit nog jonge rectoraat had
gelegd. Op 29 april 1962 vierde hij zijn 25-jarig priesterfeest;
de eigenlijke datum was 13 maart, maar dat viel in
de vastentijd. De jubilaris werd in pastorie afgehaald en
voorop in de stoet gingen de schoolkinderen, Jong Nederland,
de Jonge Garde en de Harmonie van Panningen. De
voetbalclub had de versiering verzorgd. Gedurende de
Plechtige H. Mis werd hem veel lof toegezwaaid voor zijn
werk in het rectoraat. Rector Diederen dankte allen na
afloop en haalde de woorden van St.Paulus aan: ”Moet er
geroemd worden, dan moet ik roemen op mijn zwakheid.”
In zijn rectoraatstijd werd de houten noodschool vervangen
door een nieuwe lagere school en werd een nieuwe
kleuterschool gebouwd, evenals een rectoraatswoning
aan de Kempstraat. Toen hij zijn ambt aanvaardde was er
alleen het meisjesgilde, maar mede onder zijn leiding
werden Jong Nederland, een afdeling KAB (later NKV),
een afdeling van de KVP, de jeugdboerinnenbond en de
sportvereniging S.V. Egchel opgericht. Egchel kreeg een
bloeiend verenigingsleven. In februari 1965 werd rector
Diederen tot pastoor benoemd te Meers-Elsloo, in zijn
geliefde Zuid-Limburg. Dankbaar nam het rectoraat
afscheid van hem in de parochiezaal, waar hem namens
de gemeenschap Egchel en de Boerderijweg een kroonluchter
werd aangeboden. Met weemoed vertrok hij uit
het dorp, waar hij ongeveer 300 kinderen gedoopt had.
Op Paasdag 1977 werd, nog in Meers, zijn 40-jarig priesterjubileum
gevierd. In oktober van datzelfde jaar overleed
zijn huisgenote Liesa Frings. Dit was voor hem een
grote schok. Zijn gezondheidstoestand ging zienderogen
achteruit en onverwacht overleed hij in het Medisch Centrum
te Geleen op 1 mei 1978.
