Volgde zijn broer Dirk IV op als graaf van Holland 1049-1061, trachtte zijn macht uit te breiden in de Bommelerwaard doch werd vermoord bij Nederhemert 28 juni 1061 door een handlanger van bisschop Willem van Cuijk, begr. Egmond, tr. omstr. 1050 Gertrudis (Geertruida) van Saksen, geb. Saksen omstr. 1033 (dochter van Bernard II Billung, hertog van Saksen 1011-1059, en Eilika van Schweinfurt), regentes voor haar minderjarige zoon Floris II 1061-1071, week met haar tweede man naar Gent uit toen Godfried III met de Bult tegen Holland ten strijde trok 1069, overl. 4 aug. 1115, begr. St.Walburgskerk, Veurne (B.), tr. (2) 1063 Robert I de Fries, graaf van Vlaanderen .
