Hij diende de elect in Holland en werd na 1423 regent voor zijn zoon in het hertogdom Gelre, verwierf de heerlijkheid Leerdam in pand, bereikte in 1439 dat zijn heerlijkheid Egmond van het klooster werd afgescheiden. Gehuwd op 24-06-1409 met Maria van Arkel, overleden op 19-07-1415, dochter van Jan V heer van Arkel en Johanna van Gulik.
