Zijn ouders hadden een groentezaak in de Planciusstraat no. 57, schuin tegenover hun woonhuis op no. 14/1. In 1947 toen zijn vader overleed, nam Rinus Muurling de groentenzaak over. Hij was toen 16 jaar. Hij ontmoette Alida Maria Dijst, roepnaam Alie, op 30 april 1955, Koninginnedag, bij 'Heck' op het Rembrandtsplein te Amsterdam. Zij verloofden zich op haar verjaardag, 11 juli 1955, en trouwden op zijn verjaardag, 20 maart 1956.
