Pieter Westrik was kapitein op de Fortuyn. De eerste reis die de Fortuyn maakte was in september 1723. Met zijn VOC leden ging hij naar Nederlands-Indië. In totaal had de Fortuyn 200.000 gulden aan kostbaarheden aan boord, zilveren staven en zilveren munten.

nt-size: 16px; background-color: #ffffff;">Binnen 97 dagen bereikten we met de bemanning Kaap de Goede Hoop. De bemanning moest voedsel inslaan voor de reis naar Nederlands-Indië. Op de terugweg moesten Pieter Westrik en de bemanning aan een route werken om weer terug te gaan naar Nederland. In 1724 gingen Pieter Westrik en de bemanning terug naar Nederland, maar na 18 januari kreeg niemand meer iets te horen over de Fortuyn. Het is nog steeds een raadsel wat er is gebeurd met Pieter Westrik en de Fortuyn.

Een opperkuiper is een toezichthouder van VOC-schepen. Hij nam vooral toezicht van de Fortuyn. Hij reisde met zijn bemanning vooral naar Nederlands-Indië. Waarom is de Fortuyn ons favoriete schip? Aan de naam van het schip leek het op een rijk schip. Dat bleek ook zo want er waren 200.000 gulden aan boord. Voor de rest was het ook interessant hoe de Fortuyn vlak voor Indonesië neer was gegaan.
