Notes about Wilhelm (Willy) Gronert

Willy Gronert as a young boy was quite an athletic.

I found some articles about his speed-skating results. During the West Dutch Championships 1893 in Amsterdam, he was described as "youthful". As he was from Amsterdam, he was cheered at by the audience during this long, long 10K against Mr. Vervoort (23.45.0 vs. 23.57.0).
One week later, he skates in Haarlem, but the journalist thinks he is disappointing ("he skated so firmly in Amsterdam, but now he does not seem to get into his stride"). I found some other articles about W.Gronert participating in running and cycling events in these years (1891-1894). In October 1890, he wins a running race for boys 14-17 of age.

Willy Gronert sails from Amsterdam to Batavia (now Jakarta) on March 23, 1895 aboard Steam Ship Burgemeeter Den Tex.

An article in the Algemeen Handelsblad of June 29,1897 about track cycling races in Batavia. Willy Gronert wins the 3000m with handicap and is second on the 25K.

He married on April, 7, 1910, to J.J.F. Abbema at the Sugar Factory Tjepiring Kendal in Semarang.

The digital archive also gives a death proclamation of a Mr. W.Gronert, having died on Nov. 21, 1937 in Soerabaja.
An article in the "Nieuws van de Dag voor Nederlands-Indie" says that the Dutch-Indian trade world loses a great men in sugar and other products, who was always ready to give information and whose advice was admired. From 1897, he used to work at the HVA, in that time it was still importing and exporting. He passed various departments and acted as an agent in Semarang, later. After that, he was head of a trading firm (Colonial Trade and Consignation) in Semarang. This firm was one of the first to export rubber. The firm went broke because of enormous losses in pepper. During the last 15 years, he was a broker, first in Semarang and later in Surabaja. Since a long time he was the secretary of the Broker's Association in Surabaja.
