      Uit het onderzoek van Judith Minkman:
      In het doopboek van Borculo vond ik een Jan Smijs, die op 17 oktober 1723 gedoopt werd (DTB 323), als zoon van Willem Smijs. De naam van de moeder wordt niet in het doopboek vermeld, maar in juni 1710 trad een Willem Smijs in het huwelijk met Maria Stoffers, dus het is aannemelijk dat zij de moeder van Jan Smijs was.

      Aangezien bij de geboorte van kleindochter Jenneken, Janna Groes al weduwe was moet Jan Smies vóór 2 oktober 1744 overleden zijn.
