About the town » Lutjegast, Westerkwartier, Groningen, Netherlands

Lutjegast is a village in the Westerkwartier area of Groningen in the Netherlands. It is administered as part of the municipality Grootegast. The name Lutjegast originates from Gronings, a dialect of Low German, in which lutje means small or little and a ga(a)st is a higher, sandy ridge in an otherwise swampy area. Lutjegast was the birthplace of the explorer Abel Tasman. Although the house of his birth no longer exists, he is memorialised with a monument, plaque and street name. Until 1829 a manor named "Rikkerdaborg" stood in Lutjegast.
