Notes about Dr. Arnoldus Cornelis DUKER


Al jong een vlijtig ventje. In 1842, vijf jaar oud, krijgt Arnold al een prijs van de Schoolcommissie in Enkhuizen ·Äôvoor betoonden leerlust·Äô in de derde klas van meester Boon. Uit naam van de commissie reikt J. van Simmeren hem de prijs uit. Vertrekt op 2 april 1862 naar Barchem, Gelderland. Hij is daar beroepen als predikant na zijn studie theologie te Leiden, die hij summa cum laude voltooide. Interessant is dat in dit onaanzienlijke plaatsje een bloeiende Woodbrookers-gemeenschap is gevestigd.

Van 1865 tot 1869 is hij predikant te Geervliet, dan van 1871 tot 1882 te Franeker. Het is interessant te zien dat hij in die tijd veel contact onderhoudt met zijn halfbroer Willem Frederik. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk is er veel contact geweest tussen de kinderen van de eerste en tweede vrouw van vader. Als hij 45 jaar is gaat hij vrijwillig op emeritaat omdat hij een ander klimaat wil voor de gezondheid van een zijner dochters. Hij wordt leraar hebreeuws op het gymnasium te Haarlem en vanaf 1887 tevens op het Haags gymnasium. Daarnaast geeft hij godsdienstonderwijs aan de opleiding van de Nederlandse protestantenbond en de school van de Vrije Gemeente Amsterdam. Tijdens zijn emeritaat schrijft Duker zijn standaardwerk, de vierdelige biografie van Voetius, die hem in kringen van theologen en historici nog altijd faam bezorgt.

Geheel in de Dukertraditie trad geen van beide dochters in het huwelijk (een van de twee werd gek).
