De echtelieden kerkten in Pijnacker en stonden bekend als vrome mensen en liefhebbers van een ernstige "bevindelijke" prediking. Gelijk gestemde vrienden kwamen graag in huis. Hun kinderen werden vanuit een actief gebedsleven op de weg der god zaligheid groot gebracht. Dit is op te maken uit een levensverhaal van één van hun zonen op schrift heeft gesteld. Deze schreef hoe hij als jochie van een jaar of 8 gegrepen was door de vragen rond hemel en hel. 'Toen hoorde ik al gaarne ernstig bidden en spreken en prediken van bekeering, zonder dat ik wist wat bekering was. De vroome ware bij mij de beste soort menschen.' Zelf deed hij alles om in woord en daad van het Godsvolk deelgenoot te worden.
Moeder van der Spek schijn een nadrukkelijke rol in de geestelijke sfeer te hebben gespeeld. Liefde en waarschuwingen gingen hand in hand. Dit bleek temeer toen ze 42 jaar oud dodelijk ziek werd. De kinderen stonden huilend bij haar wanneer ze hen vertelde te zullen gaan sterven. Vrijmoedig sprak ze hen aan 'Ag! kinderen weest niet bedroefd en schreit niet omdat gij moederloos zal worden, maar schreit veel meer omdat ge kristenloos weest niet bedroefd. Maar ik heb nog goede belofte van den Heere verkregen, hij zal nog wonderen doen aan dit huis'. Zo trooste zij ook haar evenzeer schreiende man, 'Laat mij met ruste gaen, u kunderen zullen wel malkanderen groot maken en de Heere zal nog wonderen aan onze lieve kinderen doen' Moeder van der Spek werd in 1737 begraven in de kerk van Pijnacker. Vader Abraham is niet meer hertrouwd. Zijn kinderen groeiden voorspoedig op en kwamen tot een huwelijk. Zijn drie zonen Mees, Jacob en Paulus gingen ieder hun weg in het boerenbedrijf.
