Oorsprong van de familienaam Notten: "Ruim twee eeuwen geleden is, zoals uit dit stamboomfragment blijkt, de familienaam Otten door klankverbinding met de voornaam Jan gewijzigd in Notten." (Jan Otten, Janotten, Jannotten, Jan Notten, Gianotten ?) (bron: J.A.A. van Loon, de Brabantse Leeuw, 1953): In het oudste doopregister van de parochie van de H. Naam Jezus te Oeffelt aangelegd door pastoor Henricus Kerckhof in het jaar 1636 vindt men op 12 April 1639 de doop geboekt van: "Petrus fil. leg. Joannis Otten et Joanne Thomassen". Volgens het doopboek van de parochie van de H. Nicolaas te Haps (Hops, Hoaps) lieten aldaar op 6 Juli 1686 Petrus Otten en Maria zijne huisvrouw hun zoon Joannes dopen. Piet stierf in Haps op 8 October 1689 en zijn vrouw Maria op 9 Juni 1721. Nog tijdens het leven van zijn moeder vestigde Jan Otten zich als molenaar in Achel, alwaar hij op 21 November 1717 trouwde met Helena Smeijkens. Dit huwelijk staat in het parochieel huwelijksboek van Achel (B) te lezen op gemelde datum in de volgende bewoordingen: "Contraxerunt matrimonium 3 previjs bannis Joes Pieters Otten ex Hops et Helena Smeijkens, testes Godefridus Goyarts et Godefridus van Heze".
