Notes about Jozef Claassens

Vroeger nam men het kennelijk niet zo nauw met het schrijven van achternamen.
Jozef Claassens wordt op zijn bidprentje als Claessens vermeld.
Hij vertelde altijd dat hij apetrots was dat hij op 65 jarige leeftijd nog vader werd van een tweeling, dit bij zijn veel jongere 2e vrouw Johanna De Wit.
Ik weet nog dat hij zeker 4x bediend is, en telkens als de naaste familie bij zijn sterfbed stond, lachte hij en zij "mijn tijd is nog niet gekomen, ik ga nog nie".
Hoe is hij dan uiteindelijk gestorven ?
Hij is thuis gestorven, op de bank tijdens het televisie te kijken.
Opeens zakte hij weg, zonder nog iets te zeggen.
Dit op 5 april 1971.

Jozef was de laatste Kerk-Susse in de Petrus Bandenkerk te Venray,
De kerkbaljuw, in de volksmond meestal suisse genoemd, is een ordebewaker in een kerk. Het is een kerkelijk ambt dat ontstaan is op het einde van de 19e eeuw. De naam suisse duidt erop dat de kerkbaljuw werd vergeleken met de pauselijke Zwitserse garde. Tot de taken van de suisse behoorde het ophalen van de priester in de sacristie, om hem - na de mis - weer voor te gaan naar de sacristie. Tijdens de consecratie salueerde de suisse, staande vooraan in het middenpad van de kerk.
Dit ambt werd veelal doorgegeven van vader op zoon en het werd als een eer beschouwd het te mogen vervullen.
Sinds de Tweede Beeldenstorm verdween het ambt in tal van parochies, maar hier en daar kan men nog een suisse tegenkomen.

Jozef (Sjef) Claassens wordt geboren op 21 oktober 1891 in Afferden, als Jozef Jansen. Zijn moeder Gertruda Catharina Jansen was op dat moment 18 jaar oud en ongehuwd. Bij het huwelijk van zijn moeder met Christiaan Claassens op 10 mei 1897 (Jozef was toen 5 jaar) is hij aanerkend en gewttigd. Vanaf dat moment heet hij Jozef Claassens en is hij formeel de zoon van Christiaan Claassens en Gertruda Catharina Jansen.Source 13
