Coppen is in 1575 te Saaksum geboren en sterft in 1642 te Groningen. Hij trouwt met Anna van Hulten. Coppen noemt zich nog wel Hoofdeling en jonker te Saaksum, maar het is onwaarschijnlijk dat hij daar gewoond heeft. Hij is secretaris van Westerwolde en is te Groningen begraven, terwijl ook zijn kinderen in de stad gedoopt zijn.

Zijn zoon Eisso noemt zich aanvankelijk 'tot Saaksum', nog in 1653, maar hij vestigt zich op de Meimaborg te Raskwerd (Baflo), die hij geerfd heeft van zijn tante Bauwe Jarges, weduwe van Hayo Lewe.
