Notes about Jantje Klaas Saris

De naam Saris is afgeleid van een voormaam Saris, die op Texel het eerst werd vermeld in een akte van 1622, waarin Saris Claasz wordt genoemd als zoon van Claas Maartensz en Geertje Pieters. Ze hadden waarschijlijk familie op Vlieland. In 1644 woonde in Oosterend Claas Sarisz (blijkbaar een zoon van Saris Claasz), maar pas in het begin van de achtiende eeuw, bij de oesterschipper Claas Jacobsz Saris (geboren in 1686) wordt de naam als achternaam gebruikt. Hij kreeg deze naam niet van zijn vader Jacob Elmertsz, maar via zijn moeder Martje Claas, die vrijwel zeker een dochter was van de eerder genoemde Claas Sarisz. Zijn zoon Jacob Claasz Saris (geboren in 1715) heeft vele malen het ambt van schepen op Texel bekleed. De familie Saris is nooit uitgebreid geweest, maar bleef toch tot in de 20e eeuw op Texel bestaan. Eerst waten het zeelieden maar te beginnen met Jacob Saris (geboren in 1777) beoefenden zij later vooral het boerenbedrijf. De oorspronkelijke godsdienst van deze familie was
gereformeerd.
