The progenitor of our CONK's is Johannes CONCK. His surname has been spelled CONCK, but also KONCK and KONK on the tax ratables. His name was spelled KANK and pronounced "conk".

Johannes was naturalized 7 December 1763 in New Jersey and came from Germany. He had to have resided in New Jersey at least 7 years prior to being naturalized, so he arrived in New Jersey in 1756 or earlier.

There is also an earlier naturalization date, but I'm still researching to find out if it is Johannes KANK or a Johannes KASE.

When someone (during that time period) was naturalized in one colony, they were not naturalized in any other colony. For example, if they were naturalized in New Jersey, then moved to Pennsylvania, they had to then become naturalized in and for Pennsylvania.

During that time, New Jersey was East New Jersey and West New Jersey, two seperate colonies. It is possible to have been naturalized in West New Jersey, then later in East New Jersey.

Also, a CONK DNA Project tested the DNA from a direct male descendant of Johannes CONCK ("Sgt" John Conk's father) which traces back on the CONK ancestors only. Our CONK surname is in Haplogroup R1b1c which is Germany.

The coincidences between the mentioned Conkin and Conk families are very interesting. I'll put some comments here, in case anyone else finds it interesting, then I'll send a note to you to continue the discussion. You never know, Conk and Conkin could be the same family (at least certain branches), or they both could have gone back to a different but similar sounding name.

Here's some interesting tidbits (Tenn):
Hagen Conkin b. 1817; Hagan Conk b. 1835
George Conkin b.ca. 1780; George Conk b. 1830
Moses Conkin b.ca.1780; Moses Conk b. 1841
John Conkin b. 1776; John Conk b. 1872

James Patterson Conkin; Jesse Patterson Conk (b.& lived New York).

A Conkin changed name to Conklin; a Conk changed his name to Conklin (1900's New Jersey).

An added note, the majority Conk's were in New Jersey & New York. Our progenitor is Johannes Conck b.abt. 1735, lived in New Jersey. I have two unlinked (yet) Conck's as adults (U.S.) in 1655 & another 1677.

Our Conk's go back to Conck/Konk/Konck (mostly Conck).

Our Conk goes back to Conck (then I believe to Canada where there's Conk and eaerlier, Conck), then I believe back for a generation or two in Germany, then back to England as Conk. The earliest Conk in England was born 1529.
