1249 Lachlan Mor sent money on the horns of a roebuck to King Alexander II who had subdued Argyll. That's why roebucks support the coat of arms to this day. The McLachlan's on Loch Fyne were seafarers, therefore a royal galley is on the coat of arms, like ones used by the Lord of the Isles.
1270 est. From the records of the Scots and the Crusades, almost the most accurate crusade would be the 8th Crusade under Louis IX. "It was long the custom, when either the Laird of Strathlachlan or the Laird of Strachur died, that the survivor laid his late neighbour's head in the grave. This observance is traditionally connected with the crusades when it is said that the heads of these two families accompanied each other to the Holy War, each solemnly engaging with the other to lay him in his family burying-place if he should fall in battle." Lachlan and the Crusade of 1270 are the most probable canditates. (Clan Lachlan Magazine, Fall 2001, p. 9.)
The Clan legend is that the Lady of the Chief built Castle Lachlan while her husband was away in the crusades. If the castle was built while he was away on the Crusades, he and his son Gillescop may have been called Lord of Castle Lachlan and the river, the bay and the strath acquired their Lachlan name by association.
