== Biography ==Joan was a daughter of [[Drake-312|John Drake]] and [[Cole-329|Margret (Cole), Drake]]. Little is known of her aside from her name, and even that is somewhat uncertain. Brushfield notes that a Drake family pedigree gives it as "Alice" while Ralegh family pedigrees give it as Joan. T.N. Brushfield, "Raleghana, Part III: Remarks on the Ancestry of Sir Walter Ralegh", ''Report and Transactions of the Devonshire Association for the Advancement of Science, Literature and Art'' Vol. 32, The Association, 1900, pp.309-340 [https://books.google.com/books?id=fmRCAQAAMAAJ&lpg=PA332&ots=_bo7d2QIM&pg=PA309#v=onepage&q&f=false Google Books]Since Joan is given in the nearly contemporary 1531 Visitation of Devon, it should probably be given greater credit. In no event should this be taken to indicate a double name such as "Alice Joan" or "Joan Alice", which is not at all attested in primary sources or consistent with common naming practices of the period.
Joan is believed to be the mother of George (1527-1597) and John Raleigh. Mark Nicholls, Penry Williams. ''Sir Walter Raleigh: In Life and Legend'' A&C Black, 31 Mar 2011 pg 3 [https://books.google.com.au/books?id=R8TOqi0Dd4cC&pg=PA3&lpg=PA3&dq Google Books]
She definitely seems to have been buried at All Saints Church in East Budleigh, which has (or had) a worn inscription seeking prayers for her soul, reported by Oliver in 1840. This shows she died on 10 August, though unfortunately the year is lost. Walter had apparently already remarried by the time of the 1531 visitation, so Joan must have died before then and quite young, probably around 1529 or 1530.
