NOTE: Clan Donnachaidh, sometimes known as Clan Robertson, is a Scottish clan. William Forbes Skene (1809-92), Historiographer Royal of Scotland, wrote in 1837 that: "the Robertsons of Struan are unquestionably the oldest family in Scotland, being the sole remaining branch of that Royal House of Atholl which occupied the throne of Scotland during the 11th and 12th centuries."

The name was made when the clan Duncan fought valiantly alongside Robert the Bruce. To thank the chieftan, he said that 'your sons will be called my sons.' Thus the name was made.lvetica, Arial, sans-serif; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">adding: 0px;">Probably of more significance to George's career, however, was the influence of his mother-in-law Margaret Robertson (1700-1764). The Robertsons were also an old established Banff family. There were several branches of the family or perhaps quite separate families living in Banff at the time and most of them were merchants. George Robertson, however, was the Headmaster or Rector of the local Grammar School from 1742 to 1773. Margaret was the daughter of William Robertson, who was a thread manufacturer and landowner (see plan) and also a Bailie (Alderman) of the Town. It is fortunate perhaps that the dates preclude that she was the Margaret Robertson, of whom the minutes of the Town Council record in 1736: "March 17th - Compeared, in presence of Bailies Innes and Abernethie, Margaret Robertson and Alexander Lyon in Banff, and acknowledged that they had been guilty of antenuptial fornication, and the Magistrates, 'in consideration of their marriage, and in name of fine and amerciament, ordain them to pay £4 Sc. to William Reid, thesaurer and that instantly". x; padding: 0px;"> atrick Dockar leased a piece of land by the river, on the road to the harbour, from the town council for 19 years for the purpose of a "roperee" (a building and yard for the making and storing of ropes). It was probably a few years later that he and one of the Robertsons, presumably his wife's cousin, founded :the firm of McKilligin and Robertson, which according to the record "carried on an extensive business principally as the owners of London trading vessels". The town plan of Banff drawn in 1823 shows that the firm owned two adjoining premises in the centre of the town (see plan) and probably property at the harbour as well. Clearly the business was quite prosperous and expanding as it is also recorded that later on George's son George "commanded one of the Company's large vessels trading to foreign countries". padding: 0px;"> Robertson undertaking to obtain goods from London and the Continent for the town and inhabitants of Banff. When George's friend John Wilson (1746-1816) started on his two-year tour of England the firm shipped his chest to Yarmouth for him. Unfortunately it was unloaded at London by mistake and took some time to reach Yarmouth. By 1784, George had been made a bailie of the town. The minutes of the Town Council in 1789 record: "April 24. - The Council authorize Bailie McKilligin to purchase four blunderbusses for the use of the town". Bailies were municipal magistrates, roughly corresponding to English Aldermen, elected by the burgesses (citizens with full municipal rights). They were members of the Town Council the head of which, corresponding to the Mayor in England, was the Provost. Banff is an old town. King David (1124-1153) granted a charter to the monastery there. It is mentioned as a burgh in the reign of King William the Lion (1164-1214) and there was a Royal Castle there at least as early as 1290. The Royal Charter granted to the burgh in 1372 by King Robert II (1371-1390) is still in existence. tyle="border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"> a Grandfather) says of the burghs or boroughs: "in order to increase the commerce and industry of the country, and also to establish some balance against the immense power of the great lords, the Kings of Scotland, from an early period, had been in the use of granting considerable privileges to many of the towns of their dominions, which, in consequence of the charters which they obtained from the crown, were termed royal boroughs. The citizens of these boroughs (the burgesses) had the privilege of electing their own magistrates, and had considerable revenues, some from lands conferred on them by the King, others from tolls and taxes upon commodities brought into the town. These revenues were laid out by the magistrates (called the provost and bailies), for the use of the town". The burghs were under obligation to defend their town against the King's enemies and to provide either money or soldiers or both to help him in time of war but its burgesses were excluded from any obligations under the feudal clan system. et-color: #105a83; color: #105a83; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto;">ingen aan William

Robertson: The Robertsons, or Clan Donnachaidh (children of Duncan), were descended from the Celtic Earls of Atholl, who in turn were from a line of the kings of Dalriada. ‘Stout Duncan’ was a minor land-owner and clan chief in Highland Perthshire in the early 1300’s. Although the clan appears to have been loyal to the Bruce and Stewart royal dynasties, they also earned a reputation as raiders and feuders in medieval Scotland. The change of name can be dated to the fourth chief of Clann Dhonnchaidh, Robert Riabhach (Grizzled) Duncanson. It was Robert who tracked down, and brought to justice, the murderers of King James I in 1437. The Robertsons were involved in both the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite Uprisings. During the 18th and early 19th centuries the Robertson Chiefs refused to ‘clear’ their fellow clansmen in favour of the more profitable sheep. Family motto – Garg ‘n uair dhuisgear (fierce when roused).
